[T3] Heater Question

Guys and Gals,

Have a question regarding the installation of heater cables in my Notch.  
Scenario as follows:

When I bought the car it had a not too great engine which was further enhanced 
by the fact that the front heat exchangers didn't work.  Somone had removed 
all the casing from the heat exchangers leaving the cooling finned J tubes 
installed on the sports muffler.  A common sign.  However, they'd also cut the 
cables for the heating switch/lever in the cabin.  As such when you pull the 
lever it doesn't do anything.

My question.  How do I replace the cut cables.  I've looked inside the car and 
the only connection I can see is at the lever itself.  But it must split to 
two cables somewhere.  But where?

I've evn looked on my wagon which has the cables in tact but it doesn't seem 
to have made any difference.  Where are they?  Somewhere in the tunnel?
