Because of the low lead content of today's gas, I think this is a
long shot, but what about fouled spark plugs?

If your engine is running too rich or if you are using spark plugs
with too cool a heat range, you can get deposits of lead compounds on
the part of the spark plug insulator exposed to the combustion
chamber. When these deposits are cool then are insulating, but as
they approach operating temp they become conducting. Normally these
deposits clean off when the insulator reaches the "self cleaning
temp" but if things are running a bit too cool, they will accumulate
to the point that they can just allow the spark to drain off quietly.

I stress that this is a long shot, but it is easy to test with a
fresh set of plugs. If this started just after you switched to a
special set of HP cool plugs, try something closer to the normal heat
range for this test.
