You don't need to remove the engine, but you need to remove pretty much everything on the right side, and then you have to understand exactly what you're trying to do. Study the manual. Look at the pictures. Look under cylinders 1 & 2 and see if you see the mounting bracket and the pull rod. If so, it will be easy, but I would bet that all the linkage is gone.
