You CAN install a thermostat without pulling the engine, it's almost faster for me to pull it, then get the required sheetmetal off and back on and put it back in than to try messing around trying to stick the screws back in blindly with the engine in the car. You have to pull the right-hand intake tubes off the heads, remove the injectors, pull plug wires, remove the "goggle" pieces from around the spark plug holes, then get all the screws out for the right-hand top tin. You then have to get the bottom tin off that goes from case to heater box and that's a real gooey job, or at least move it far enough to screw the thermostat onto the pushrod and get the thermo bracket over the stud on the case and get a washer and nut onto it. I assume you have the other pieces and your flaps are intact, otherwise your're just wasting your time. You also need the pushrod and bellcrank that goes on the two center cylinder studs and the spring that hooks on the flaps and bellcrank pivot. After you get it all in place and adjusted you,get the fun of putting it all back into place. I find that a small pair of needle-nose vicegrips help hold the various pieces together while I try to get tin screws back into place.
