>From Mike: > a Unisyn Vacuum sync? A Unisyn (or similar brand name) is, to put it in deep technological terms, a "you-gotta-have-it-or-the-gods-will-punish-you" device if you have twin carbs. It lets you balance your two carbs. You do this by disconnecting the linkage to one of the carbs, putting the Unisyn (or equal tool) on the barrel of a carb (with, of course, the filter removed and the engine running) and seeing where the little ball rises to in the glass tube. Then you put it on the other carb, note the position of the little ball, and, if necessary, twiddle the idle adjustment screw until the ball is positioned as it was on the first carb. Actually, this usually takes a number of back-and-forths and multiple twiddlings until you work it out. All of this occurs, however, after you have done all the other tune-up procedures... setting the timing, adjusting the rpm, warming up the engine, etc. You can usually find Unisyns or other brands for sale in the ads of the various VW magazines. I notice that So. Cal Imports, Inc., has a "carburetor synchronizing tool" advertized for $14.95. Don't know anything about its quality, however. Probably any good local auto parts store can sell you a synchronizer of some sort. One will last you twice times forever if you don't drop it and break the glass. Your first tricky step, Mike, will be to learn to identify the several basic components of your carbs...the idle mixture screw, the idle adjustment screw, etc. Next you will want to internalize a set procedure... do "this" first, then do "that", then...well, you get the idea. Once you get used to all of this, it will go smoothly and will provide you with at least as much pleasure and enjoyment as a root canal. Synchronizing twin carbs is not an option, it is a requirement for good performance and economy. And it gets easier after, oh, the first thousand attempts.... I hope you will follow my motto: "Any fool can do it...I just did!" Keep us informed of your progress. Best...
