I can't visualise the problem; I use a 10mm open-ended wrench
between the fan housing and the rod.  It doesn't need more than half
a turn (say three goes, turning the wrench over each time so the
offset head can catch the nut).   Is there some self-inflicted
modification you've made, Toby?
