'69 f.i., AT. timing set. like i said, my car won't idle. suspecting it merely to be set to 850rpm (not 950 as AT should be) turned up the idle a bit. still not idling. basically it's not consistent. occasionally, it will run fine, but by the next light, it may want to die. probably connected to this is my other increasingly major problem: highway driving - after more than 5 minutes say, on the highway at 55-60mph, the car will suddenly lose power and slow down. previously this happened at speeds of 65mph, now it's even beginning to happen at 50mph, and when driving around town. sometimes it will correct itself in 4 or 5 seconds, other times i'll have to pull off the road, let it die, and restart it (giving it some gas). when this happens, black smoke (could be blue, i'm only looking in the rear view mirror) comes out the back. my favorite thought about this is the fuel pump. could it be on the way out? is the car simply not getting enough fuel? other thoughts: severely blocked fuel filter (unlikely, since i changed it 5k miles ago, although i did run out of gas once which could have dragged some crud from the tank into it). some other perhaps relevant points: changed the coil (for a used one) suspecting it me be defective, like toby's dad had had, but no difference. been getting terrible fuel, economy for a while - about 18mpg. same symptoms if i put the car in 2nd or 1st gear, so i don't think it's anything to do with the AT. hope someone can understand what i'm talking about. please help, i'll be commuting 4 hours/day in a couple of weeks..... thanks in advance, sonny ------------------------------------------------------------------- Unsubscribe? mailto:type3-request@vwtype3.org, Subject: unsubscribe
