Couple of hints/tips. 1. If the holes are not too large (less than 6-8 inches in diameter), I would use fiberglass composite to patch them. Most auto parts places sell a kit that contains everything you need. I would use fiberglass composite for any size patch, but for holes much bigger then above you need to have a surface to work against (mold) and it is more critical that you get the right amount of material there to take the loads and make the part last. 2. If you use sheet metal (galvanized road signs do work), PLEASE put the patch in from the inside of the car. This way the patch is not hanging off the rivots if any weight is put on it (battery, kids or your feet, etc....) I would also recommend using POR-15 or Corroless paint to protect the surfaces of the pan and the patch from further rust. Probably not a bad idea for the fiberglass option either. Just my 3 cents.
