Subject: RE: [T3] Egads!! RJs tales of air-cooled weirdness keep on truck My first guess is the starter is screwed up...it would explain why the engine still turns when there's no fuel or spark. My next guess, and probably more accurate, would be some short in your electrical system that is causing the generator to receive power and it is acting like a DC motor. Again, this would explain smooth, ignition-free/fuel-free running and the requirement of the battery connection as well as that tendril of smoke coming from the dash region. Counter clockwise is wrong. Standing at the rear of the car with the engine in front of you it should be turning clockwise. As for the rattling noise, it may be that the pulley fan is not secured well. Mine would make a rattling noise as well and it turned out that it wasn't tight enough. Grab the pulley fan and see if it wiggles side-to-side, sorta floppy like. If so then it needs to be tightened. Just a guess.
