According to my official (European) Volkswagen model list (dated, 12/75),
under passenger cars, I found the following about your '317' VIN (sorry if
the syntax is bad):
[Notchback Model # Model Name Production Years
picture] ... 317 VW Limousine
1500 A/1500 N 1963 -- 1966
... 317 VW Limousine
1600 A/1600 L 1966 -- 1973
The 1500 A and 1500 N models were available only as Notchabacks, could be
ordered with optional sunroof and only as a left hand drive version.
The 1600 A and 1600 L models were available only as Notchbacks, could be
ordered with optional sunroof and only as a left hand drive version.
I guess they were basically the same; the engine size and other things were
slightly different. I don't understand how you can have a Fastback
however. Could it be 311 perhaps? Write to VAG and find out more.
Anyway, the Fastback VIN's look like this:
Model # Model Name Prod. Years S/R
311 VW Limousine 1600 T 1968 -- 1973
311 VW Limousine 1600 TL 1965 -- 1973
312 VW Limousine 1600 T 1968 -- 1973
312 VW Limousine 1600 TL 1965 -- 1973
313 VW Limousine 1600 T 1968 -- 1973 X
313 VW Limousine 1600 TL 1965 -- 1973 X
314 VW Limousine 1600 T 1968 -- 1973 X
314 VW Limousine 1600 TL 1965 -- 1973 X
I have entire list of all Volkswagen models - in Finnish - but I am
"getting" to making an English language version. I can get this to anyone
interested, or if you have a specific question about your own VIN, mail me.
I can make a list like this for you.
