I have no feedback on what you're problem could be but it doesn't sound
like a voltage regulator problem to me. The ones I had either worked or
didn't - there wasn't any in-between stage. Of course, I don't know if
that's always the case. If I had to take a total guess, it sounds like you
had a short somewhere, although I don't know why it would only occur when
the car is running, unless the wiring is only getting a good contact from
that extra voltage from the charging system. The reason I say that is
because, in my 6-volt Square, the turn signals only work when the car is
running, I presume because of poor connections on the steering column that
only 7.5 volts can get through. Someday, I'll get around to cleaning
them...

Anyway, if you really want a regulator, contact either Bill & Steve's at
http://209.68.38.45/ or BFY at http://www.bfyobsoleteparts.com/ I'm sure
they both have 'em for around $20.

On a similar note, 1966 was the last year of 6-volt VWs but as far as I
know, your regulator is the same as my '65 6-volt regulator as well as all
T3 61-66 regulators. I'm not sure why you would say "one year only." If
my FLAPS told me they only had a listing back to '66, I'd be really scared.

I believe having to rev the engine is normal to make the light go out (at
least almost every VW I've had required that - I think the regulator takes
a certain voltage to "switch" the light off) As to your generator light
coming on at night, mine glows very, very dimly all the time, so basically
I can only see it at night or if I cup my hands really, really tight around
the light. Turning the lights, etc. on does not affect the generator
light.

I was also curious as to why you said everything was "expensive" in your
previous problem description. I couldn't figure out if it was in jest or
not.

I wish I had an extra 6-volt T3 regulator - I'd send it to you for shipping
costs.

Good luck,
Everett

That is good news! Is it black with a red interior?
