> I haven't tried it, but I do know that I don't like > the idea of ABS. You know, the insurance companies had offered a 5-10% discount for insuring cars equipped with ABS. Since then, they have found that the accident rate for automobiles w/ ABS is higher. It seems that because the ABS equipped auto has a shorter stopping distance, they get rear-ended significantly more times in accidents involving 2 or more cars. Seems they stop quicker, but the car behind them doesn't. The 40,000 to 70,000 lb. fire trucks I drive all have magnetic brake retarders by Rockwell-Telma on them. There is a magnetic yoke and disc installed on the truck's driveshaft that comes on when the brakes are applied that slows the driveshaft, and disengages when the driveshaft stops spinning. You can't lock up the wheels at speed, no matter how hard you stomp on the brakes, and these trucks stop on a dime. The brakes average 25,000 miles between service, verses 4-5,000 for trucks not so equipped. I wonder why this hasn't made it's way to the public arena as of yet. I've been to more than a few accidents where the driver stomped on the ABS brakes, only to panic and release when the pedal started to vibrate and the brakes whined. I've tried 'em and don't care for them. Just my $.02. David Walters '73 1600 L Notch S. FL, USA
