The FI pump is controlled by the computer. This is a safety feature.
It prevents the pump from running on after an accident when gasoline
might be spilling. In my opinion this is an important point; I would
not underestimate its value.

Why not just use the standard mechanical pump? This works fine, does
not require a pressure regulator, and is inherently safe since it
stops when the engine stops.
