Okay, all you electrical engineers and wannabees, on my super beetle (yes, Greg, I know that's not a type III) I have a problem with my charging system that's really got me fooled. The car has a 12v alternator conversion using the bosch #9 120 080 122 alternator with a remanufactured sticker that says AL82X on it. I just put a new regulator in the car after I discovered that the alternator had no output without it. I tested it with an old regulator from the Squareback (there's the T-III content) and got 14V, but that regulator had a bad resistor in it, so I got a new one. Okay, here's the catch. When I bolt the regulator down, the charging light on the dash comes on and the output of the alternator (measured at the generator) goes to about 4.5 volts and stays there regardless of engine speed. If I remove the regulator from it's mount, the output goes to normal 13-14V depending on engine speed with the light barely glowing (probably from old wiring). Can anyone 'splain that one to me? Isn't the correct condition with the regulator bolted down, and doesn't this head in the completely opposite direction? I'm not sure if it's something I just don't know about this alternator setup, or if I missed something really dumb along the way. Help!
