Are all these folk T3ers? I ask because many T1ers use the filter kits
that are a one piece unit with the oil pump cover. These will reduce the
oil pressure which is why GB doesn't recommend them. The system he made
for Types 1-3 uses a high pressure filter and good sized oil lines.
Now, part of his philosophy dictates that an external oil cooler shouldn't
be needed on an engine and one of the reasons, though minor, is that many
oil coolers are a restriction and they are what cause the drop in oil
pressure. Porsches (911, 912, 914) with modified engines regularly use
external oil coolers. You just need to make sure your oil lines are big
(ANS8 I believe; see the Berg catalog for details) and you have a
nonrestrictive oil cooler, like what VW and Porsche use which is the
radiator style (i.e. look at your own cooler) and NOT the
tube-thru-the-fins like you see so often advertised.
If you *really* don't want an external filter, fine, it's your baby and you
do what you want and you don't have to justify it. If you're not getting
one because of conflicting information I suggest you talk to a couple of
professional engine builders who regularly work on performance engines
(sorry, but the purest engine builders are basically worthless on this
topic). Contact Gene Berg Enterprises and explain your dilemma and see
what they have to say.

P.S. All the local folk said I couldn't put an alternator in a T3 without
cutting up the tin and/or having to make a machined bracket -- as we now know
there are *some* things you just shouldn't believe wholeheartedly.

Toby..
The reason I didn't go external filter was that all the local VW folk said
that I'd get lower oil press and running 38psi on the highway (hot)
was as low as I wanted to go with a new engine.
Maybe things have changed over the years and I may go full flow now but am
yet to come across a single person who can say " I have a filter and get
38 PSI ( or thereabouts) on the highway HOT. I'd really like to hear
that
about a GB system.
