Hi Gang, I'm eagerly awaiting the arrival of a rebuilt longblock (1600 DP) for Dudley. I haven't ever pulled a VW engine before, but I'm going to do this one. While waiting I've already rebuilt my carbs, gotten all new fuel line, and purchased other odds and ends to make this go as smoothly as possible. My entire drivetrain is a greasy, cruddy, etc mess as the transmission boots are in extremely rough shape. I plan to clean up the crud and install new boots before the new engine goes in. My longblock is coming with a new clutch attached. Here are my questions: 1. Is there an effective way to clean the asbestos wrappings on the heat exchangers? 2. What is the best way to get the crud (gear oil, grease, and years of dirt) off my tranny? 3. What, if any, transmission seals need to be replaced with the new engine? 4. Regular 30wt or synthetic oil for the new engine (no high capacity sump or filter -- sorry Toby E.) ? 5. Any opinions on additives eg Dura Lube, Slick 50, Motor Up, etc...? 6. Any words of wisdom are appreciated :-) Thanks Volks. Wish me luck as Dudley goes under the knife. Mike Kasold '67 squareback "Dudley" - quaking in his (brake) shoes
