My Squareback broke! ;-(

On the way back from the store tonight, I heard a loud POP! like my
Squareback was popping out of gear.  I was accelerating in second gear at
the time after coming to a full and complete stop at a stop sign. :)  The
shifter appeared to move and now it's stuck in second gear!  The shifter is
frozen there!

I checked out the shift rod and rear coupler.  They both look good, I
removed the screw that holds the rod to the coupler and the rod/shifter
moved freely but I was unable to move the 'hockey stick' by hand or by
using the shifter.

I checked my repair books - no mention of troubleshooting for "Shifter
stuck in gear."

This sounds bad to me but I ask the list for opinions on the possible
source(s) of the problem...
