front seal trouble

After looking like an oil leak around the front seal (flywheel seal), I
removed the old seal with a great deal of difficulty. The inner part of the
seal was the only way to pry it out and doing so, it came out entirely except
the outer edge that *fits* inside the case. I tried removing all the seal I
could but when I tried pressing in the new seal, it didn't go in correctly.
Any idea as to how I can press it in without ruining another 
seal ? Any help is great,
