The originals have several plys of fabric reinforcing; they look 
like they are punched from very heavy rubber belting material.  I 
have never had one fail.  It might have been useful to loosen or 
remove the bolts that hold the steering column in place.  Then 
another person sitting in the driver's seat could have moved the 
whole upper end a bit, per your directions, and made installation 
simpler.

I should have several OE used disks around if you're interested.  
There's no reason they should be anything but cheap since THEY never 
fail, they're one of the parts of the car that is always left when 
the rest is scrapped.
