Seems pretty unusual- if they fried, I'd check the rest fo the
electrical system, especially the voltage regulator.  Maybe if your
battery overloaded it?  Seems unlikely.  The field coils don't work as
hard as the armature...

However, I've had a couple of generators (one Lucas, Lord of Darkness)
that died because the cloth that held the field coil in shape rotted,
and let the wires fall into the armature, with predictably terminal
effects.
