About item 6...it's not necessary (not to mention a pain in the neck to
include in the normal maintenance routine)!
Also, the master cylinder is not the problem. The problem is in the brake
pads, as they are what is creating the noise.
Brake squeal will normally occur when the pads are cold and should go away
once they are warmed up -- city driving, like making a couple of stops, is
enough to warm 'em up. To warm them up quickly you can make your first
couple of stops very short as this will heat them up much more quickly than
a slow, gradual stop.
Metallic brake pads have a greater tendency to squeal compared to asbestos pads
(which I thought were now illegal, but..?). Racing pads (like the mild ones on
my 914 :) and carbon pads work great but will make even more noise as they work
best when hot (like in a race, thus the name). Normal daily driving doesn't
generate enough heat to keep them silent.
I had my front brakes rebuilt and my mechanic didn't keep the (original) piston
retainers. When I later replaced the pads they talked quite a bit! I had tried
using some self-adhesive aluminum strips on the back of the pads but they only
worked for a week. I then used this blue goopy stuff on the pads and it did the
trick, they stopped squealing! Due to my experience I'm convinced that the
piston retaining springs help keep the squealing down. When I can get my greasy
hands on some when I replace the disc pads I guess I will find out for sure.

6. tightened fr wheel bearings once a month even if they are not loose
The only thing left is to replace my master cylinder and that will happen
in a few weeks. The squeal is bad in the morning or when the brakes are
cold. Even with all of this work and new parts, my brakes pull to the
left. Thus, I believe that the master cylinder may in part be the culprit.
However, the noise is really annoying and will not go away.
What to do?
