If your brake pedal doesn't return all the way to the top, leaving
you a bit fo free travel before you can feel something contact
something else, then this can cause the wheel cylinders to lock up.
It should affect both rear wheels equally, however. A problem in the
wheel cylinder should not cause harm to the MC.
The original MCs for 68-9 have not been available for maybe 20 years.
In my moments of greater than normal stupidity I somethimes wish I
had one for my 69, but those moments pass. It was a very stupid
design that only took VW two years to recognise, and the later style
is a good replacement. If you replace the brake light switch wiring
harness with a later one you have everything you would want for a
clean, functional, well designed installation.

Wow, got away with only a jack and a puller. Pretty lucky. I'm
afraid I probably would have bought the whole thing, fixed it on the
spot, and driven it home. I've done that more than once.
Now, about jack restoration....
