After today's driving, I now think I was totally wrong. I believe my power
increase stemmed from the fact that I had my timing way too advanced with
my 009, something like 34 degrees, at the time I switched to the stock
dizzy. I did some research today via the Type 2 home page
(http://www.type2.com) and found some very useful information on timing the
009. Here's the web page:
http://www.type2.com/best_of/best_of_threads/timing_009.html

The gist of the document is that most 009s have 21 degrees of advance, you
want 27-30 total, so setting it statically at 7.5 BTDC will give an
acceptable result.

I validated, via the timing light, that 21 degrees is the advance curve I
receive with the 009.

Why did I switch to the stock dizzy in the first place? Various notes on
the Vintage VW list convinced me that, for a stock engine, the stock
distributor gives a superior advance curve for daily driving. I have no
reason to doubt that and would still like to return to the stock
distributor, once I solve the problems I have with mine.
