Good point, but the injector pulses are so small (now that's an orifice!) that I think the rubber hose would absorb that shock easily. Besides, if that were it's function, the damper should be placed closer to the rear of the car. > Also, if it can retain air inside itself, THAT would be a good > damper- our well uses an air bladder to store pressure in the > tank... Just a thought, Toby You're right that would make a tremendous difference, but it would require us to mount the damper in a particular orientation, something that I have never seen mentioned, even in the Bosch workshop manual. I have no proof, but I think the volume is small enough that all the air would be swept out in the first minute of use. A bladder accumulator is a good thing. It uses a spring or air pressure energized diaphram to keep the system pressure more constant. The K-Jetronic cars (Rabbits, etc) use these. I have toyed with the idea of puting one of these in my T3, but the systems run at different pressures, and accumulators have a limited useful design pressure range (except for the air pressure energized ones, which these are not.) The purpose of the accumulator in the Rabbits is to maintain fuel pressure while the engine is off, to make starting easier. I have pretty much fixed my hard starting problems by getting rid of all the leaks, so an accumulator would probably just have made me leak more gas out on the ground. For me, this remains a mystery. SOMEONE did this for a reason, and I'm not comfortable with the thought that it was a stupid reason. Still, there are a few examples of stupid things that VW has done over the years, and we have the additional fact that a similar damper was not fitted to any other D-Jetronic car that I know of. --------------------------------------------------------------------- Melissa Kepner Jim Adney Laura Kepner-Adney jadney@vwtype3.org Madison, Wisconsin ---------------------------------------------------------------------
