hi blake, good to see that another vw nut is running wild on the net!! about that squareback, you could try nigel scott(5276977).he is the guy i bought my notch off.nigel works on quite a few american import karmann ghias so he might have some info about the conversion. by the way,you may have been surprised to learn that i now have a '57 oval window beetle!!!well,it was one of those 'once in a lifetime finds'.the car was advertised 4weeks ago in the t&e(about the time of the jamboree) for $1000.00.i rung up and the guy said it wasnt warranted or registered.we talked about the car for a while and he said he had bought the car origionally to turn into a cal looker(what a waste that would have been!!!) anyway he said that there were quite a few receipts for the car etc.i said that i wanted to see this car and i arranged to see the car during the day(best time to see a car).just before i left home the next day craig rung to say that he would not be able to meet me there.anyway to cut a long story short i went to see this car with a mate who doesnt know anything about vws.as we drove up the drive i didnt think that the car i was looking at was the right one.as my mate chris said....'it's in very good condition'. well i was a bit cheeky and got the car going and took it for a drive.it drove well except that the timing was out.the motor felt very strong etc.i knew then that i wanted the car. blah blah blah.....i got the car for $900.00.since then i have discovered the following; origional purchase order and receipt service booklets 1&2 full service history from 1957-1967,the car then sat in a barn in kumeu as the original purchaser had passed away and left the car to her daughter who didnt drive it. then from 1980 the servicing started again till 1995 when the car was bought by craig who drove it only 10 times since he bought the car. receipts for full mtr recondition in 1986.since then the car has done 26000mls. the list goes on... i did have a problem with the chassis #'s though because the original owners' husband had bought a 1956 oval a year earlier(also brand new)the 1956 car seems to have vanished since 1961!!i suspect this could be a bluey/green oval i owned exactly 6yrs ago rego be1297.the reason i say that is this....amongst the receipts for the '57 oval there are also receipts for the '56 oval.the registration # is only givern in the last receipt in 1961.this receipt has 1297 quite visible but not the alpabets be.what a shame.i have been looking for this oval for quite a while now since i regretted selling it.it had done 40000mls from memory and was absolutely mint.well thems the brakes. anyway ill sign off now as i assume that being with xtra costs you by the hour.why dont you join ihug??they are $40.00/mth and offer unlimited access. while im on the subject of signing up,you should subscibe to type-3@umich.edu .there are quite a few type 3 nuts on here and i have learnt an incredible amount of stuff from the people who are 'enrolled'.it doesnt cost anything.its like a chat room except and you get to see that everyone else in this group is concerned about the preservation of type 3's.i think its also safe to say that most of us type 3 nuts are also vw freaks.
