Other Type 3's also came with the mirror hole plugged; as far as I can
tell, this plug was color matched to the paint code just like fender
welting and or the front moustache chrome seal.  I have come across a few
of these plugs still packaged in their plastic VW bags, and it wasn't until
I removed mine and added a right hand side mirror that I finally figured
out what they were.

Then to make things even more interesting for Fastback owner's, there was
the M233 option: simplified version like 311 (311 - 314).  This model does
not even have a plugged mirror hole (nor a lot of other accessories - no
clock, no passenger side sun visor, no chrome trim, simplified steering
wheel etc.).

 * I know that if you remove a stock mirror from a car that came with it
 * you will see that there is a large nut welded to the inside of the
 * sheet metal.  Does anyone know if the "far side" door on a fastback

I have never seen this nut.  I will again check the doors that I have and
see if it is in there.  Aside from the threads in the right side door of my
Square, there was not a nut and the mirror that I bought simply screwed
into place.

Why not just buy two NOS mirrors?  The newer Hella mirrors are much bigger
than the OE and it makes for much improved vision.

True.  If there are any RHD Squareback owners that have a left side door
mirror hole plugged ... I have an original mirror for you!  This is getting
to confusing.
