I agree a manual is needed but I think this one should be the first: How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive A Manual Of Step By Step Procedures For The Compleat Idiot by John Muir ISBN 0-912528-33-8 (this is from an April 1977 edition so it may have changed?) Less than $40.00 This is also affectionately known as the Idiot's Guide and is a very 'user friendly' manual, perfect for non-mechanic types and those starting out with VW air cooled engines.
