I agree a manual is needed but I think this one should be the first:
How To Keep Your Volkswagen Alive
A Manual Of Step By Step Procedures For The Compleat Idiot
by John Muir
ISBN 0-912528-33-8 (this is from an April 1977 edition so it may have changed?)
Less than $40.00
This is also affectionately known as the Idiot's Guide and is a very 'user
friendly' manual, perfect for non-mechanic types and those starting out with VW
air cooled engines.

Bottom center of the engine. Late cars have a sump plate with no drain plug
in it.
Sounds like you need to buy:
Volkswagen Official Service Manual, Type 3
Fastback and Squareback 1968-1973
published by Robert Bentley, Cambridge, Mass, 1974
ISBN 0-8376-0057-X / LPV 997 383 / VSQU
(excellent book, complete and well written)
Also about ~$40.
