These same symptoms occoured in my friends Ghia.  After adjusting the 
clutch cable as far as it would go, and buying a new throwout bearing, it 
turned out that the clutch disk pad had partially disintigrated, and 
therefore wasn't fully disengaging.  The throwout bearing turned out to be 
fine upon inspecton, but that's what it sounded/acted like, a worn bearing. 
 We put a new clutch disk in, after making sure the flywheel was ok, and 
problem solved.  Hope that helps.
