You whiner... (kidding), Have you checked your bearings lately? How about the tranny fluid levels? Aren't ther two fluids? ATF AND gear oil. The whine is metalic? or could it be tire whine? Try (in a safe place) shifting the car into neutral while car is in motion. If the noise is still there, then it is not the tranny (at least inside). If no more noise (and fluid levels are correct), then you are in need of tranny work. This tests only eliminates the torque converter to the main drive in the tranny, not the final drive, bearings (4), or axle snubs. Try this first before panicing.
