Re: New Hollander

Richard,
Congratulations on your very fine purchase!

I don't know a whole lot about the earlier models -- before the internet I
thought I was the only dude who had a T3 and loved it. What did you do on
the maintenance? You may want to try adjusting the points, valves and
sparkplugs. Replace the oil, fuel filter and clean all of the metal
connections, !especially the grounding wires!.

I recommend you get some Type 3 (T3) manuals. At a minimum get John Muir's
book, How to Keep Your Volkswagen Alive -- A Manual of Step by Step
Procedures for the Compleat Idiot. This will get you through the basics
and is a good book for beginners (to air cooled engines). Your next
purchase should be either (or both!) a Bentley or Haynes manual.

P.S. I copied the book's title exactly and that is how John spelled 'complete'.
 My spell checker caught it!

Maybe a little introduction of me as a new subscriber (how many are there?)
would be in place:

I'm 32 years old and live in The Hague Holland. I owned a black '68 beetle
untill the rear-end tryed to be faster than the front on a slip road on my
way to a slipschool (really!).

What to buy next? I fell in love with - and almost bought - a '71 SAAB 96.
But what's that in the adverts: a Variant: never heard off. It was stored
for years in a farmers barn (no chickens in it), covered with an untouched
thick layer of dust. We had to push it outside because you could't get into
the car since it was parked between walls. With one turn of the key the
motor ran! After negotiations I payed about halve the price asked. Since
then I drive a '67 1600 granada-red variant. Fitted with a never overhauled
one carb. 1500 engine which runs very good.
...
A few weeks ago, after maintenance of the motor it ran not so smouth
anymore: when I take my foot of the throttle and push it again the exhaust
plops. I had the ignition checked but it's still there. Also the motor
stammers a bit. Anyone familiar with this combination?
