First, replace the speedometer cable. This will probably fix the non-working odometer unless the speedometer itself is working. 89K miles does not mean the engine needs replacing! You replace an engine when it stops working or shows signs that it's thinking about not working. If she still drives well then keep driving her! My Porsche has just under 88K on the original engine and she still scoots like no one's business! (BTW, the 914's use a Type IV air cooled engine). Save your money. It sounds like you got one good deal! I bought a '71 squareback with a automatic and sunroof for $300. It's doesn't have much rust, everythings quite solid. But the engine is the original and the odometer is stuck at 89k, which means it could really use replacing(the engine I mean). The big question is, where should I get it? My priority is for reliability, not more power. I hear I can't just get any old type I, or II engine. But don't know much more than that. horizontally opposed, Daniel Giesbrecht '84 quantum GL5 wagon (for sale) '71 squareback automatic (mine!)
