I know the tank doesn't need to be removed. Something else to check are the axial thrust rings. After all this time they may need to be replaced due to wear and it will affect steering/wandering. I am taking my baby in tonight to get this done, as a matter of fact. One way to help take up any slack is to tighten the bolt in the right, upper stabilizer arm. This helped me some but there's still too much slop. To check: Jack up front end so tires are off the ground. Have an assistant grasp the tire at 12 and 6 o'clock and rock the wheel back and forth. You look at the joint where the upper stabilizer arm meets the torsion housing. If you can see the arm moving back and forth (the joint gap widening and narrowing) then you need to make the adjustment. See a Haynes or Bentley manual for this very easy procedure. There's a lot of wander in the steering, and I've been told that the other components (ball joints, tie rods) are in good shape. The main thing I was wondering about is whether removal of the gas tank is necessary, what not to screw up, etc. Thanks! Doug H. '71 Squareback
