Steering Adjust

Hi all:

I was just wondering if anyone has experience in adjusting the gearbox 
on a late-model Type 3.  There's a lot of wander in the steering, and I've
been told that the other components (ball joints, tie rods) are in good
shape.  The main thing I was wondering about is whether removal of the
gas tank is necessary, what not to screw up, etc.
