Comparing how close your case number is to those numbers, you can approximatly say which month it was. According to the number it`s a 1500 that was built August and December 1963. They started with 255 340 in August and in december they started with 406183. So your engine was probably built in september 63. Chassis number: start in august 63 with 221 975 and start in dec with 321076. So I think the chassis also was built in september 63. Since several people seem to be interested in that number game, here are details about the book I`ve got my information from: written by: H.-G. Mayer-Stein name: Die grossen VW, Nordhoffs Vermaechtnis: VW 1500/1600, 411/412 publisher: Verlag Karl Goerner, Germany ISBN 3-9803665-0-2 It`s a 111-page book that tells you just about everything you always wanted to know about these cars, in terms of history. Most book stores in Germany can supply you with inernational press if you have the ISBN no. Should work anywhere else in the world, too. If you can`t get the book and have any questions, feel free to ask me. Roland `69 square `69 TL `69 beetle
