All my fellow type 3 lovers. To the new people on the list, that is
people before 2 months ago, hello and I must say a big hello to the
people I met from the list while in Amsterdam etc. As you probably know
I am from Australia and have a 1964 1500 'S' Notchback (all original
except a few choice accessories etc) and a 1965 1500 'N' Variant Panel
Van (2276cc motor, BRM wheels, empi steering wheel, etc etc etc etc -
I'll detail some of the goodies a bit later). Well anyways, late last
year I rung Paul from the Type 3 Detectives regarding something or other
and was offerred accomodation etc if I wanted to come to the UK and
Europe. What the hell I thought so left Australia late April to meet up
with the Poms a day or so later (long flight!). Well Paul had a truck
load of parts for me to buy and keep me broke and by the time I had left
the UK the first time and seen a couple of shows in the UK plus one in
Hannover in Germany I had a genuine Empi GTV steering wheel, a repro
Flat 4 steering wheel, NOS flat lenses (euro/Aus), cats eye mirror (1961
T3 mirror-very very hard to get), green fender beading for my 'S' (NOS
of course), genuine Empi GT rocca covers, interior trim, NOS speedo
(another), and a whole host of other goodies like NOS big knob locking
glovebox lock (early Type 3 owners know what I am talking about!), and
stuff like that. After about one month I bought a 1980 VW Jetta and
drove to France, through Brussells? and onto the Type 3 show in
Amsterdam where I met a lot of fellow nutters and saw plenty of Type 3's
in varying conditions but overall very good. I there bought a NOS rear
apron for my panel van which I was desperate for, a pair of NOS wrap
around lenses (clear) for the 'S', more interior bits not worth the
mention, another pair of NOS door handles (I have a door handle
fettish), and also sorted out the purchase of a pair of NOS bumpers for
the panel van. I realy have a bad memory of whatever else I sent but
when I get the photo's back I well tell a little more in detail (about
800 photo's getting developed by next week!!). After the Amsterdam show
(where I got awfully pissed the first night but I wont go into that
either), I went with my good buddy Jurgen back to Kiel, his hometown and
stayed there for a bout a week. While there we went to Wolfsburg again
(my 2nd trip in 2 weeks), where I bought something I couldn't believe I
would ever find NOS, a full circle horn ring to suit the 'S' model
steering wheel- I was in disbelief! I have it right next to the computer
now. I also bought NOS side trim for the 'S' which it is desperate for
and which is also 100% impossible to get in Australia due to our models
having stainless steel and a more details I wont go into now. By the end
of that parts hunt I had relieved myself of another dollar or two for
sure. After the week with Jurgen, who also gave me a heated rear window
for the Panel Van and a beetle spare gas can that fits in the spare
wheel (I also have a restored 1956 oval), I went back to the UK where I
swapped the car for shipping of parts yet to come with Paul from the
Type 3 Detectives. I am still waiting for another set of BRM wheels, a
set of 4 stud sprint stars and a set of slotted 5 stud wheels plus my
rear apron and heated rear window.
As soon as I get the photo's I will know what I bought and saw, until
then my brain is still coming to grips with working again so I hope if
any of you out there are looking for parts you give me a mail as I have
a very good idea of who has what at the moment, including the factory.
I'll write some more soon. Glad to be back on the list!
Aaron.
