Just to add a little of my VW history - Bought my first car (Fiat 128 sedan) back in 1977, a year later, figuring out that I couldn't work on it, went looking for a '67 Sqbk. An older cousin's girlfriend had a '66 Fstbk and talked me into looking for a '67. After a lot of looking, found one at a VW dealer parked around the corner. It had been traded in for a newer car, and the dealer didn't want to fix it (heads were popping). We negotiated and agreed on $500. I came back the next day to find that they had promised the Sqbk to one of the mechanics, so to get it the price would have to be re-negotiated! Obviously PO'd, I agreed to an additional $50, and I drove it home. Got a cheapo rebuild put in there. To avoid getting it smog checked, the dealer sold it to me as *junk* which meant that I also had to get it checked for brakes, lights etc. I couldn't figure out how to get the backup lights working, so I removed them and installed a T fitting in the bumper hole to tie down kayaks. What isn't there, can't be checked! Anyway, the upshot is, I am the second owner of a '67 Sqbk that I've owned for about 19 years. Done a lot of work on it over the years, currently sitting in the yard waiting for me to get it running again. I parked it 5 years ago as it was overheating badly, and couldn't figure out the cause. I now know what to do, just need to do it. At one point I could remove the engine in 20 minutes, solo. I've also owned a '64 Deluxe Bus, '67 Deluxe, '64 Baha Bug, '71 Honda CB350, '80 Toyota truck, '67 Sunbeam Alpine, '85 300ZX, all gone on to others, currently have (2) '80 Westi's, '87 Subaru 4WD Wagon, and my truck has been in the family since 1965, a 1964 Ford CrewCab (custom built by Ford no less). I have (2) 9 year old boys, one of whom wants to fix up and drive my Sqbk, and a 5 year old girl, who wants a pink bus! My SO is warming up to the idea of me getting another Deluxe, but still calls my Sqbk "The junker in the back". I'm hoping the kids will help her come around. - Jeff '67 Sqbk, Grass Valley, California
