Actually I know for a fact to the contrary that the fastback, regardless of it's name, was not marketed as a sports car. I just recently read some lit that it was basically designed as an upscale alternative to the bug, that didn't have the connotations associated with a station wagon. Since the curving lines are similar it makes sense that the fastback would fit this role better than the Notch.
