Re: High-Capacity Sump

It just so happens that I have a Gene Berg 1.5qt oil sump on my baby. Don't go
any bigger unless you are NOT going to lower your ride and you are building an
all-out, strictly drag racing engine OR you are going to raise your ride and
make it strictly an off-road vehicle. The 1.5 is *plenty* big enough,
capacity-wise, to keep a big street engine properly lubed, even on 20mph hairpin
turns taken at 45mph while passing some blatantly stupid Portland driver who I
almost pulled over and kicked the livin'...but anyway the 1.5 is perfect.

The reason I went with Gene Berg is the reputation for quality. CB Performance
has them as well but they couldn't (wouldn't?) tell me what they were made of
except aluminum. If you do go with CB Performance don't get the sump with the
oil filter that installs on the drain plate, where the oil pickup tube is. This
is a bad idea -- the pump needs unrestricted *suction*. But that's where the
stock one is located, right? Yes, but have you seen the size of the holes in
the stock filter? Much bigger than an element filter. And, bless their little
engineering hearts, the stock oil filters have a bypass so if the screen filter
gets clogged oil can still be sucked up. The internal sump element filters, as
I was told, don't have this option. Besides, an external oil filter is MUCH
easier to change and you can show it off :)

After reading the VW Trends of Oct '97. It sounds great about installing
the oil sump onto the engine. Wondering has anyone done on type 3 engine?
Which one is better off to buy 4-QT Mega Sump or 1.5 Qt Thinline Sump? For
daily driver!
