Do you mean that when you turned the key to the start position the starter just spun very fast without turning over the engine? If that is the case then the solenoid DID engage because that is the part that closes the electrical circuit to run the starter. If the starter will spin, but the engine doesn't then there are a couple of possibilities. If this only happens when the engine is hot then the bendix (part of the starter) is shot, and a rebuilt starter will fix it. If you are trying to describe something else, keep trying 'til we understand.
