James - It is an acquired touch, to properly use the improper tool! The screwdriver is used to bridge the gap between the two large terminals on the starter. Some models and some rebuilds have placed a larger piece of plastic between them to prevent this style of starting, however. It can still be jumped with a little creativity. Good luck. Not that I wanted to, but I got so good at doing it, I could do it in the dark without a flashlight! on my '64 Deluxe. I had to install a relay on my '80 Westi also. Bosch makes a low cost simple to install kit just for this application. It and info can be found in the Busted Bus archives: http://www.type2.com/best_of/best_of_threads/Starter_Problem.html - Jeff '67 Sqbk '80 Westi IwannawalkthrusunroofDeluxe! > >> Anyway, I'm sure that I need that starter relay, and also, I was > not > >> able to use a screwdriver to start the bus when the same thing > >> happened to her. > > > >If you mean that using the screwdriver did not work either, then a > >relay won't help. > > Actually, I meant, I did not know how.
