Yeah, I admit that this was a long shot, but here's what I was 
thinking:  When you shift the car into the various gears, ATF gets 
pumped down various passages and into various chambers where it 
pushes various pistons into different configurations.  When you AT 
gets low on ATF it can run out of oil before the required tasks are 
done.

Suppose the transmission had just enough ATF to go into D, but if I 
fill all the R chambers first then I no longer have enough ATF to 
make the D functions work, so... no D.  If you let the car sit 
overnight the ATF slowly drains out of all the chambers and there is 
once again enough for the ONE gear of your choice.

Yes, a long shot, but there was no harm in checking and topping 
up anyway.

Didn't sound like a linkage problem to me because under both 
conditions the linkage was coming into D from the same direction.  If 
the symptom was that the only way to get D to work was to go to 2 
then D then I would be right with you on the linkage.
