How about some UHMW Tape?  UHMW is Ultra High Molecular Weight 
Polyethylene.  It is a very durable slick plastic tape.  It is for use 
on high wear spots.  I could supply two small scraps that are adhesive 
backed.  Contact me directly with dimensions.  Keep them small as this 
stuff costs about $300 a roll.  I have used this on many high wear spots 
and it lasts great.

square of felt at the contact point?

Yeah I have 'em workin on the 'S'. I would rather disconnect them if I
drove the car regularly as a bad point about them is that it is wearing
out my doors where they rub against the door!
