I can't explain the oil problem, but I don't think you should use a
'73 pressure sensor in a '71, unless somebody can confirm that it's
back-compatible.
My f.i. manual by Elfrink has a chart that goes through the early
'71 model year, and indicates VW part number 311 905 051B for the '68-'69
model, years, then 311 905 051C for '70 and '71. ('72 & '73 models aren't
included on the chart.) Meanwhile, my Rocky Mountain Motorworks lists
Bosch part number 0 280 100 001 for'68-'69, and Bosch part number 0 280 100
116 for '72 and '73. The '70-'71 pressure sensor is not listed in their
catalog.
So... you may have the wrong part! I would look for a known good
'70-'71 unit to determine whether this is the source of your problem.
Will you be making it as far east as Michigan? Drop me a line if
you'll be ending up anywhere near Ann Arbor, and I can introduce you to the
VW locals.
