Could be 6; don't forget the number with no suffix. Could be less;
sometimes some letters seemed to get skipped. How about tinted glass? I
have one that seems to be tinted from the factory, but I've never seen that
listed as an option.

This was when VW added the extra metal strips that helped lock the
windshield in place. This required a windshield a bit smaller all around
and a different weatherstrip also. The opening in the body remained
unchanged, however, so an old windshield will fit if the metal strips are
removed.

add: 20D Clementine, 60D Elm Green, 90D Pastel White, 31V Colorado Red, 12D
Shantung Yellow, 31F Iberian Red, 50D Sapphire Blue, 54D Marina Blue, 91D
Kansas Beige, 885 Gemini Blue, 10B Texas Yellow, 20B Brilliant Orange, 30B
Kagan Red, 51B Gentian Blue, 60S Turquoise, 89C Brown, 96U Alaska Blue, 96L
Marathon Blue. That's 18 more unless I duplicated some. There are probably
some errors in my list because my copy quality is poor, and this list is
probably still not complete. Wow, what drudgery! Why are we doing this?

68 and 69 were different: different filler flap opening shape! I missed
with/without the trim strip, but wouldn't sealed beam/small bulb take the
same fender on a type III? Did these ever come with the radio antenna hole
on the right side?
So I get these basic styles:
early bullet, no filler flap
early wraparound, no filler flap
late bullet, 68 filler flap
late bullet, 69 filler flap
x 2 for w/wo side marker lights
x 2 for w/wo trim strip holes
This gives me 4 x 2 x 2 = 16 possibilities, but I don't know if all of these
actually existed. For example the 69 may not have been available without
the trim strip AND without the side marker light.
