Fellow VW Owners, I thought that I would post some encouraging news for owners of old VWs. Last week we had to Smog our '69 Westfalia (1600cc, single Solex carb). Before the test we looked high and low for a listing of *allowable* emissions and found none. So, for the benefit of all, here they are: MAX AVG OURS <@ 2500rpm> HC(ppm) 600 163 51 CO(%) 4.50 1.70 0.53 CO2(%) 10.3 O2(%) 6.3 MAX AVG OURS <@ idle> HC(ppm) 650 192 135 CO(%) 5.50 2.30 0.51 CO2(%) 8.1 O2(%) 9.4 (Yes, these numbers are right! PASSED!!) Figures represent MAX (maximum emissions allowed); AVG (average emissions for passing vehicles in this category); and OURS (our vehicle's emission readings). VISUAL INSPECTION REQUIREMENTS PCV System, Thermostatic Air Cleaner, Ignition Spark Controls, Carburetor, Air Injection System (n/a for ours), and Other Emissions Related Components. Now you know what to expect. When the Smog shop runs the pretest, they'll give you the readings but won't tell you how close you are to passing (or failing). Good luck! You too can pass Smog II. (We didn't even get a tuneup beforehand!) Emily '64 Notchback 1500S (exempt :) '69 Westfalia p.s. Sorry for the not specifically Type III content, Greg...
