I just bought...

Forgive me if you read this in type-2 or r.a.m.vw.aircooled already...
but I am sooooooooo. Sooooooooo, excited, that I have to post here
too. :-)

I just bought a red '66 Squareback. Quite solid. $1000.00
No negotiation, but that's ok. I paid $1000.00, mostly on
the basis of "little or no rust" and the kick-myself-if-I-don't
factor. Seller was very nice, even drove me to the DMV, stood
in line with me, and paid 1/2 of the title transfer cost.

The only real problem that is immediately evident is that the
key, when you turn it to start position, doesn't spring back.
I guess I'll have to study St. Bentley before I tackle removing
the steering column. Of course 'you' can tell me how hard
that is to fix.

The rust amounts to a battery tray, and 3 or 4 small cancers near the
back window and smaller ones by the side windows. I'm sure there are
more, but this is not a rusty car, and I believe is a good
candidate for quality resto. I am souped. And broke.

The whole Type III thing is new to me, (I haven't even had my
bus that long...) but I'm pretty excited about it. You might have read
my posts and realize that I've been looking for a squareback for some
time now. I found it! Dual Carbs (I flooded it the first time I tried
to start), and disc brakes of all things...

It ran so well, I did not bother checking valves or compression, even
though I had my tools. I took off work at 10:00 am saying I had an
"emergency" :-) and got back at 1:30. Does that count towards being
a VW Fanatic?

Regards,
James
