...although, the cold start system *could* have been just a marketing item. The extra system is very simple, very inexpensive (for mass production) and *could* have been just a pacifier to the carburetor/choke generation. Remember, FI was relatively new back then and people's doubts needed to be eased, silly as it may seem now. I would not discount marketing as it is a powerful business motivator ($$) -- reasons don't always come from engineering necessity (or logic). Why would anyone disconnect it? It WONT come on if its too warm. The cars may start well without it but it may help a bit too...VW has a reason for everything.
