I noticed these types of trucks also, the VW engine attached to a manual transmission that transferred power via a driveshaft to a rear differential axle. Some of the trucks had single-cylinder air cooled engines (the industrial type you might find on farm grain augers, etc.) driving the rear wheels in the same manner. Douglas
