Getting a PWM (pulse width modulated) electronic VR designed and marked has
been a long term project of mine for longer than I'd care to admit. I have
a circuit that works pretty well now and I would plan to package it inside
old Bosch VRs.
While my design was intended for our Bosch generators, the same idea would
also work for the old Bosch alternators that use an external regulator, in
fact the alternator circuit is quite a bit simpler to implement than the
generator.
Just as a test, how many of you would be willing to buy such a beast if the
cost were, say $30 plus your old VR?
The advantages would be better regulation, virtually infinite lifetime, and
no generator noise on your radio. Current output would be the same--30 A,
determined by the generator.
