The car originally came with some very nice right angle connectors for the HT leads out the top ot the dist. These are usually lost when someone replaces the leads with some kind of replacement set. Now the leads press against the lid and short out unless they are in very good shape. Try to find some of the originals or a replacement set with right angle ends. This will also prevent the crater (sorry, too late in your case.) BTW, I don't believe the originals are available for love nor money any more. I have a number of them, however, and would be willing to sell they. They are used, but not cheap. They can be reused forever, just replace the WIRE (which is cheap.)
